In a variable-leverage arrangement for adjusting the braking force applied to disc 15 by a slave cylinder 2 by adjustment of the position of a fulcrum 22 in dependence on the load on the vehicle as sensed at a rod 26, the lever 6 whose fulcrum is varied carries a backstop 31 to reduce the return idle motion, Fig. 2, by engagement with the housing at 32. The fulcrum slides on a guide 22 under the influence of a bell-crank 23 moved by rod 26. The lever output rod 8 is connected by linkwork 9-14 and 18-20 to friction pads 16 and 17, while the input rod 4 is driven by the slave piston 3. The lever is supported from pivot 28 by link 27. Movement of the brake rod 8 in the releasing direction is limited by a shoulder 29 engaging the interior of the casing.
