Joining aluminium to steel - by explosives on both sides of aluminium steel-aluminium plate sandwich

Light metal protective armour is secured to the base steel plate of a tank or armoured vehicle by an explosive method. The armour, e.g. Al, is in the form of two plates on opposite sides of the chamfered edge of a steel plate that is itself secured, by welding, at right angles to the tank body. When in position together, explosive charges on the outside of the Al parts bonds the two together and to the chambered edge of the steel plate. Adhesion is improved by ridging the steel transversely.
