Oils clear point reduction - for technical aromatic oils contg carbazole,by treatment with paraformaldehyde in presence

Reducing the clear pt. of technical aromatic oils contg. 3-10% carbazole by reacting with paraformaldehyde in the absence of a catalyst at 80-110 degrees C, esp. 95 degrees C, for 1/2-1 hr. With coal tar oils, or mixtures of coal tar oils with petroleum-derived aromatic oils, for use as furnace oils, carbon black feedstocks, impregnating oils, etc. 5.22 g. paraformaldehyde was added over 15 minutes to 1200 g. of a coal tar oil (contg. 7% of a 70% carbazole fraction) at 95 degrees C and the mixture stirred for a further 30 min. at 95 degrees C. The clear pt. was reduced from 74 degrees C to 30 degrees C. When 8.7 g. paraformaldehyde was used, the clear pt. was reduced to 23 degrees C.
