Cpds. of formula (Cl)2P(X)-OCHClC(Cl)2R(I) (where R is Cl or CH2Cl; X is O or S) are prepd. by reacting RC(Cl)2CHO with PCl5 (pref. in excess) pref. in a solvent (e.g. benzene, ether or CCl4) at 0-110 degrees (esp. 0-50) degrees C reacting the prod. with H2O, SO2 or H2S. Cpds. (I) are inters. for tetrachloroalkyl (thio)phosphoric acid esters and amides with biocidal activity.
