Utilisation of sludge from effluent treatment plants in conjunction with the removal and processing of household industrial, agricultural and forestry waste comprises: (a) mixing sludge, sepd from effluent in a treatment plant in known manner, with carbon-rich waste, partic waste paper, in the proportion of 3 pts of sludge solids to 1 pt paper, and then disintegrating the mixt (b) dewatering the comminuted mixt e.g. in a centrifuge, and drying on a felt belt. (c) mixing the dried prod with wood, bark or bone waste in the ratio of 1:1 and (d) carbonising the resultant mixt until degassed, at a temp of 600-800 degrees C for a 2hr.
