An automatic water softener for domestic and trade use adds the total water throughout by discs in a solenoid valve via a synchronous motor in an automatic control unit. When this indicates that the ion exchanger needs regenerating, a disc in another solenoid valve proportions the feed or regenerating agent. The softener is then flushed with pure water before it is released for normal use again.
