Sponge iron is produced continuously by passage of the charge through reduction vessels which incorporates a sloping channel or gutter which describes a lateral longitudinal axis rocking motion, the tilting angle of which does not reach + 180 degrees relative to the vertical. The gutters are pref. also longitudinally reciprocated. They may be covered and have in their walls heating ducts for hot gases and have apertures for the injection of fuel/gases/air into the charge material. The process permits continuous sponge iron prodn. and avoids the difficulties arising in the provision of adequate sealing of rotary shaft kilns.
