Electroslag remelting - for high sulphur steels using calcium oxide free slag

Process involves remelting a sulphur-rich electrode in a slag comprising mainly Al2O3, MgO and CaF2 under an inert atmos. free of combined or free oxygen. Pref. the inert atmos. is argon and the slag comprises 10% Al2O3, 20% MgO and 10% CaF2. Sulphur can be added to the slag to reduce the solubility of sulphur from the electrode in the slag but this is not generally required as the slag has a low sulphur solubility.
