The measuring system is used to determine the thickness of a body formed with several layers of different thicknesses, e.g. a polyurethane foam structure. The relative thicknesses of the different layers are measured using a work tool which is moved perpendicular to the layer structure, with the penetration resistance of the work tool being recorded. The measured relative values are converted into an absolute value for the thickness by comparison with a characteristic curve. Pref. a boring tool is used with its rotation and feed rate both maintained constant.
