Foundry coke production - from petroleum coke, coal pitch and anthracite mixts with pre-calcining of one component

A coking mixt. of petroleum coke with =8% volatiles, bituminous coal, coal tar pitch and anthracite is used, in which =1 component is given a previous heat treatment to reduce the volatiles to 0.8-1%. Pref. mixts. contain 5-40% anthracite which has been calcined at 1000-1400 degrees C, and the mixt. is coked at 900-1200 degrees C. Stronger coke for larger lump size is obtained, which is more suitable for use in foundry cupola furnaces, giving more carbon per unit volume and higher iron melt temps.
