Herbicidal nitrophenyl carbonic acid esters carry as essential substituents of the phenyl ring =1 nitro gp and =1 halogen atom, and as an optional substituent of the phenyl ring an alkyl gp. They can be prepd. by reacting an aqs. soln or suspension of an alkali halo-nitro-phenolate with an equimolar amt of a chlorocarbonic acid ester. The cpds are fast-acting selective herbicides suitable for use in cereal cultures and on turf.
