A method of feeding material into a filter unit, esp. a filter press, operates with a gradual increase of the feed press. to a final press. which is then maintained right to the end of the filtering operation, while the rate of feed of material/unit time gradually and progressively decreases. The rate of increase (dP/dt) of feed press. (P)/unit time (t) is flattened-off at least once before the final press. (P max.) is reached, and then, after this flattening-off, is again increased. This is pref. achieved by reducing the power input, i.e. the product (P x Q) at least once during the increase of press., then again increasing this power input. Enables a given residual moisture content to be achieved in a shorter time, with a given max. permissable terminal press.
