Building element, esp. insulating board, comprises a prim. large-pore structure internally with the pore walls coated with a water-insol. (or sparingly sol.) non-combustible material; the external faces of the element are constituted of a sec. coating or structure surrounding the prim. one which may be highly hygroscopic, esp. of cellulose fibres, or may be of sponge-like polyether, polyethylene or other plastics foam. The sec. structure may be formed from the solid phase of an impregnating agent having volatile liq. phase, esp. from partly water-insol. decompsn. prods. of reaction of the water-sol. constituents with air or other gas in the pores, or it may be formed from water glass and its decompsn. prods.
