Purifying flue gas through filter bed - using intermittent operation of bed segments while one segment is emptied and another is refilled

A device for purifying flue gases comprises a filter bed contained between two vertical, open-structure walls, the gas flowing in through one wall and out through the other. The filter bed is sub-divided, generally perpendicularly to these outer walls by =4 intermediate partitions, into segments, moving dampers regulate the supply of flue gas in such a way that two of the segments are always out of operation. With this arrangement, the bed material remains fixed while gas is passing through it, with the result that it is uniformly utilised, i.e. different rates of flow of bed material do not occur, and also there is less prodn. of dust as a result of grinding of the bed material. One non-used segment of the bed is always available for emptying and another for refilling with fresh bed material.
