Proscillaridine-4'-methyl ether prodn. - by specific OH-protection with trialkylorthoesters or tetraalkylorthocarbonates giving improved yields

The 2', 3'-OH gps of proscillaridine are protected by the gp. C(R2)Or1 where R1=1-4C alkyl and R2=H, CH3 or OR1 prior to methylation in 4'-posn and removal of the protecting gps in known manner. The process increases the previous yields from 25-50%. The ether is used in treatment of cardiac insufficiency.
