Prodn of vinyl acetic acid and opt. also gamma-butyrolactone is by reacting allyl alcohol (I), allyl esters (II) or allyl ethers (III) with CO in the presence of heavy metal catalysts of sub gps. VI, VII and/or VIII, and in the case of (II) and (III), also in the presence of water. Specif. allyl esters such as allyl acetate, allyl propionate or allylisobutyrate are reacted at 50-300 degrees, esp at 110-160 degrees C, with catalyst such as carbonyls, chlorides or iodides of Rh, Pd,Ni,Ir,Pt and/or Co, opt. together with iodine-contg. cocatalysts such as CH3I, NiI2 or PdI2 and 0.01-20 mol water per mol allyl cpd; to give high yields of a mixt of vinyl acetic acid and gamma-butyrolactone.
