Fuels for carburettor engines contain an oil- and gasoline sol. cpd. of formula A- (COX)m (I) (where A is the residue of a benzene- or naphthalene-polycarboxylic acid with m COOH gps. or the residue of a mono- bi- or tricyclic nonaromatic polycarboxylic acid with m COOH gps. and a total of 8-16C atoms; m = 3-6; X (same or different) are OR1 or NR2R3 or two X gps. can form NR4; R1 is a 1-20C alcohol residue; NR2R3 is the residue of an aliphatic cycloaliphatic, araliphatic or aromatic primary or sec. amine with 1-36C atoms; NR4 is the residue of a 1-20C primary aliphatic, cycloaliphatic, araliphatic or aromatic amine; provided that =2 of R1-R4 contain =8C atoms). Cpds (I) are detergent additives with good carburettor cleaning action which do not decompose in the hot (=350 degrees C) inlet valves.
