Test tube for propagation and prepn of cell cultures - with transparent plastic piston carrying propagating glass

Bacteriological and virological cultures are developed in an improved "Leighton" tube consisting of a small transparent plastic cylinder open at both ends, one of which has an outwardly projecting flange, whilst the top end has a stopper. A piston of transparent plastic, restricted in its down stroke by an internal ridge, makes a seal against the inner surface of the tube and carries the propagating glass. When the culture has developed the piston can be raised close to the top of the tube for operations such as vaporising excess fixing fluid, dyeing, washing, drying, etc., and the culture plate afterwards pushed clear for transfer.
