Granular bulk material is preheated and partially fired prior to being charged into a rotary shaft kiln by subdivision of the material flow into two streams, which are passed counter currentwise through hot gases from a central combustion chamber. The hot gases are pref. made up by the hot flue gases from the kiln and the hot gases from a booster combustion chamber which is independently fired. The system allows preheating of the feed to cement clinker firing kilns to a degree which is not possible in conventional vertical shaft pre heaters. It is used for cement mfr.
