Grafted - polyhydroxy compounds, in particular grafted cellulose and cellulose - derivatives, processes for their preparation and their use

Graft copolymsn. of polyhydroxylated polymers, esp. cellulose, e.g. regenerated cellulose, cotton linters and paper pulp, is effected by reacting with acrylamile in the presence of ceric ions, eg. ceric sulphate, and in the absence of air, in aqs. acetone or aqs. 2-methyl-propanol-2 as solvent. Gives a high degree of graft copolymsn, and high strength papers.
