A two stage compressor for air, gas or liquid has a single piston of special design so that the two stages of compression are carried out by one stroke of the piston. The latter has an inner sleeve (7) and an outer sleeve (1) each with a respective set of seals (8, 3) which move telescopically inside a common cylinder (5). The outer sleeve (1) is reciprocated by crank rods (2) located between the inner sleeve and a stepped lower part (10) of the cylinder. The cylinder carries a valve system (6) at the top, the inner sleeve also carries a valve system (9) at its top, and similarly the outer sleeve (1) carries a further valve system (4) which controls the chambers formed below the other two valves.
