Method of lifting a float glass ribbon over the sill at the exit of the float glass tank in which a partial vacuum is created above the glass which is sucked upwards towards a set of rollers, which it does not touch until the glass is cool enough not to become deformed by contact with it. The method and apparatus reduces the damage done by prior art methods in which the end or sides are gripped or in which the lower face is raised on a gas cushion but which can scrape the edge of the sill etc.
