A depth recorder for well drilling rigs uses a rope attached to the drill string pulley block to rotate a drum in a direction depending on whether the drill bit moves up or down in the well. The drum drives pulse generators and their trains are substracted, when the bit moves up, ro added when the bit moves down, to the depth record on an indicator. A bit balance cuts off the counter when the pulley block load is below a pre-set figure.
