Extraction and recovery of aluminium - from aluminium alloys in a mercury system

Finely shredded aluminium alloy maximum dimension 50 mm. is carried in a transport stream of mercury at velocities of 50-100 cm/sec. into large vertical columns, where the contents are heated to 520-530 degrees C. to solubilise Al. 2 or 3 columns can be used for maximum soln. Counter currents of mercury and fresh aluminium alloys are utilised within these columns also. Insoluble matter is sepd. out and removed, mercury being continuously recycled. The aluminium dissolved in the hot mercury is crystallised out by spraying into a cool chamber. The aluminium can then be further reformed.
