Storage of a combustible gas, partic. natural gas, in an underground reservoir in a water-bearing stratum, by injecting the combustible gas into the central top region of the reservoir and injecting a secondary gas, e.g. a neutral gas such as nitrogen, combustion gases or air, pref. of higher density into the peripheral zone of the central part of the storage and into the lower levels thereof.
