Appts. comprises a converging diverging venturi scrubber and a collecting tank having a lead lining for resisting the corrosive action of materials carried by the smoke. Caustic or acid materials and a foaming agent are admitted to the tank(s) for reaction with acid or based materials respectively and (b) for collecting non-condensables and non-solubles mechanically in foam so that the corrosive materials may chemically be reacted and the non-condensables and non-solubles collected in the foam conducted to a disposal area.
