Moquette fabric prodn by chain knitting non-woven web - formed by feeding needled carded lap to raschelle knitting machine

A carded fibre lap (e.g. 50-150 gm/m2) is needeld to increase its thickness and tenacity and so produce a non-woven web which is pref. netted after cutting its edges. The web is then fed to a Raschelle knitting machine in a direction aligned with the knitting direction of the needle so that the knitting machine inserts lines of chain stitching to produce a moquette fabric. The finished fabric may be consolidated by applying adhesive (e.g. polyethylene based) to its reverse face or by heating to fuse thermoplastic fibres which may be incorporated into the non-woven webs. The top face of the moquette fabric may be clipped to produce a plus finish. The planes in the non-woven webs are undirectionally aligned thereby eliminating subsequent alignment process. The resultant moquette fabric is not thick.
