Metal chlorides, e.g FeCl3, ZnCl2, CuCl2, CoCl2, SuCl2, PbCl2, CdCl2 and prepd. by extracting the metal chloride into a water immersible org. solvent following the mixing of appropriate metal salt, other than a chloride, with an alkali(ne earth) chloride or ammonium chloride in aq. soln. Following the sepn. of the org. layer the metal chloride is recovered by the addn. of water. The org. layer consists of an amine or mixt. of amines, as a chlorolychate contg. =18C, or tributylphosphate, and can be diluted with satd. diphatic hydrocarbons, aromatic hydrocarbons, carbon tetrachloride or chloroform, and can contain an additive, such as a sparingly water sol. alcohol.
