Wood fibres in a treatment fluid are fed to pref. a heated treatment chamber to produce paper pulp which is fed from the treatment chamber and continuously monitored to check (a) its density using pref. a gamma-ray absorption device; (b) its flow rate using a magnetically operated flow meter; and (c) the density of the liq. fraction of the pulp using pref. a refractometer. Pref. these measurements are fed to a control device which controls the feed of fibres and treatment fluid to the treatment chamber and also controls the temp. of the pulp in the treatment chamber. The quality of the pulp can be accurately sampled without filtering and testing the solid and liq. components of the pulp separately. A better quality pulp can be produced more quickly.
