Lime and quartz-contg. material are reacted under hydrothermal conditions in the presence of satd. steam to form a suspension of hydrated Ca silicate which is moulded and dried. The quantity of residual quartz in the shaped body is reduced to is not 7 wt.% by grinding =98% quartz-contg. reactant to particle-size 270 mesh (sieve mesh opening size 0.053 mm) before reacting it with the lime according to a specif. programme relating min. reaction time to particle size distribution.
