Novel 41-ethoxy-21,61-dimethylpropionanilide (I) is an analgesic which is about 4 times more active than phenacetin, but it is well tolerated and its toxicity is low. In partic., the administration of (I) does not cause elevated methaemoglobin levels. (I) is prepd. by (a) reacting 4-amino-3,5-dimethylphenetole with an acylating agent which contains the desired propionyl residue or (b) reacting 41-hydroxy-21,61-dimethylpropionanilide with an alkylating agent contg. the desired ethyl residue.
