Oxazine nitroxides having the formula (I) (where R1, R5, R6 and R8 are each H or alkyl radicals; R3 and R4 are alkyl radicals or, together with the C atom to which they are attached, form a cyclohexane nucleus and R2 and R7 are H atoms or, together with the 2 C atoms to which they are attached, form a cyclohexane nucleus). Cpds. (I) are pref. obtd. by treating an alpha, beta-ethylenically unsatd. ketone with NH3, redn. of the amino-ketone prod. to a beta-amino-alcohol, condensn. with a ketone to give an oxazine and oxidn. Cpds (I) are useful in the study of the structure of liq. and solvation phenomena and are polymerisation inhibitors and anti-oxidants.
