High-aromatic low-S hydrocarbon raw materials are prepd by (a) destructive hydro-aromatisation of vacuum gas oil at 500-620 degrees C, 5-50 atmos., space velocity 1-10 hour-1 and 500-3000 nm3 H2/ton crude oil, (b) sepng. from the prod. a fraction boiling in the range of 200 to 300-400 degrees C and residue (I) boiling at 300-400 degrees C, an (c) sepng. an aromatic concentrate (II) from the fraction with boiling range 200 to 300-400 degrees C. The hydro-dealkylation of concentrate (II) to yield naphthalene is claimed; the use of fraction (II) or residue (I) to produce soot is also claimed. The soot is used in rubber, tyres, dyes and lacquers. The process involves fewer stages and gives high yields. Hydrofining of the vacuum gas oil is avoided. The degree of desulphurisation is 80-90%. The yield of aromatic concentrate is 2-3 times that in known processes, and the yield of naphthalene is 2-4 times as great.
