Conversion of filament tows into a fibrous sliver - by using a helical cutter to produce pointS of weakness along the filaments and then stretch-breaking to form fibres

Two separate filament tows are advanced over separate helically bladed cutter rolls mounted with their axes transverse to the advance direction of the tows whereby to produce points of weakness (formed by inclined cuts) at spaced positions along the tows. The tows are then combined, pref. on a conveyor, and pref. fed through a draw roll assembly to stretch-break the filaments and form a fibrous sliver. The pitch of the helical blades is pref. adjustable, and the resulting fibres have a cotton or wool like appearance. The method produces little dust end provides a more uniform sliver.
