1339036 Polymer dispersions BADISCHE ANILIN- & SODA-FABRIK AG 30 April 1971 [2 May 1970] 12360/71 Headings C3P and C3U Aqueous polymer dispersions are obtained by polymerizing one or more ethylenically unsaturated monomers in aqueous emulsion in the presence of a dispersing agent system comprising a mixture of (a) an alkali metal or ammonium salt of a C 12 -C 20 monoalkyl or monoalkenyl sulphate and (b) a polyhydric alcohol which is partially esterified with a C 12 -C 18 fatty acid. Examples illustrate the polymerization of (1) n-butyl acrylate, styrene, acrylonitrile, methacrylic acid and methacrylamide, (2) styrene, butadiene, methacrylamide and acrylic acid, (3) n-butyl acrylate, styrene, acrylic acid and methacrylamide, (4) n-butyl acrylate, vinyl acetate and acrylic acid, (5) styrene, n-butyl acrylate and acrylic acid, and (6) vinylidene chloride, methyl acrylate and acrylamide, using as dispersing agent a mixture of (a) C 16 -C 18 monoalkyl/alkenyl sulphates (sodium salt form) and (b) sorbitan mono-oleate, sorbitan monopalmitate, sorbitan monostearate, sorbitan mono-oleate or glycerol mono-/di-stearate. The polymer dispersions can be admixed with clay to form paper-coating compositions. The compositions may also include a natural binder such as casein or starch, e.g. 12 parts polymer plus 4 parts casein, or 3 parts polymer plus 11 parts starch, or 15 parts polymer alone per 100 parts by weight of clay.
