FORMAMIDINE DERIVATIVES THEIR MANUFACTURE AND USE IN PEST CONTROL

1340600 Substituted phenylformamidines CIBA-GEIGY AG 1 June 1971 [2 June 1970 5 Jan 1971] 18295/71 Heading C2C The invention comprises compounds of the formula wherein Hal is F, Cl, Br or I; R is H, a substituted or unsubstituted C 1 -C 4 alkyl, C 2 -C 4 alkenyl or C 2 -C 6 alkynyl group or an unsubstituted C 1 -C 4 alkoxy group; and R 2 is a substituted C 1 -C 4 alkyl group, or a substituted or unsubstituted C 5 -C 12 alkyl group, C 2 -C 4 alkenyl or C 3 -C 6 alkynyl group; and salts thereof. They may be obtained by (a) reacting the corresponding aniline derivative of the formula with the corresponding N-formanilide of the formula in the presence of SOCl 2 , COCl 2 , POCl 3 , PCl 3 , PCl 5 , (CH 3 ) 2 SO 4 or p-CH 3 C 6 H 4 SO 2 Cl; (b) heating the corresponding isocyanate of the formula with the corresponding N - formanilide of Formula III; (c) heating a compound of the formula wherein "Alkyl" is a C 1 -C 4 alkyl group with the corresponding amine of the formula (d) reacting the corresponding aniline derivative of Formula II with the corresponding amine of the formula or (e) reacting a compound of the formula with the corresponding compound of the formula wherein X is F, Cl, Br or I. The compounds of Formula I are suitable for combatting animal and vegetable pests, particularly insects and representatives of the order Acarina. They may be applied together with other insecticides or acaricides and with the aid of conventional diluents or carriers.
