They are prepared by treating methyl-5-chlorosalicylate with phenethylamine to produce N-phenethyl-5-chlorosalicylamide and then, if desired, methylating said N-phenethyl-5-chlorosalicylamide. Preferably the reaction with phenethylamine is carried out at 140-180‹ F. and the methylation is performed using dimethyl sulphate either in an aqueous solution of sodium hydroxide or a solution of potassium carbonate in aqueous acetone.
