1354741 Tunnels &c COMMERCIAL SHEARING & STAMPING CO 5 May 1971 [28 Dec 1970] 13349/71 Heading B1F A tunnel lining is formed by passing a plurality of major arcuate lining segments 10 of concrete, whose diameters have been reduced by compression, through the assembled lining 14 to a position behind a tunnelling shield 20, and then expanding each segment and assembling it with one or more key segments such as 23, 24 to form an annular lining section. The segments 10 may be of reinforced concrete, and are passed into position by cables 18 connected to a clamp 17 on the rearmost member 10 and passing over sheaves 19, 21 to a double drum winch 22. Alternatively hydraulic jacks may be used. Power lines 25 and ventilation &c ducting 28, 30 is carried by a frame 26 arranged so as not to foul the members 10 as they are inserted. The members 10 are maintained in the contracted position cable 16 until they are inserted in the lining 14. Each segment 10 has grouting holes 31 and preferably subtends an angle of not less than 230‹. The key segment (5) may abut with, or may overlap inside or outside the segment 10, Figs. 13, 14 (not shown). The joints between annular sections may be plane edged, or of the tongue and groove type, and means for maintaining the edges in register are disclosed in Figs. 10-16 (not shown). The ends of the member 10 may extend beneath a track 27 for muck cars as it is passed through the lining.
