The pick density is measured by magnetically or optically monitoring the teeth on a gear wheel 22 on the takeup motion, the warp tension is measured by a straw gauge 33 and the beam diameter by a potentiometer 30. Provision is made for reverse driving and the gear train on the takeup motion is variable to control pick density. The electrical circuitry compensates for shedding tensions.
