1369824 Indexing device for railway maintenance vehicle CANRON Ltd-CANRON LIMITEE 22 Sept 1971 [2 Oct 1970] 44188/71 Heading E1G An indexing device 11 fixed to a track maintenance vehicle's chassis 20 for terminating movement of a workhead (e.g. a tamping device, a spike driver or a rail bolter) to locate it above a work station comprises a shoe 31 having its lower edge resiliently biassed into engagement with the ballast and carrying a finger 35 pivotal relative to the shoe so that a sleeper, on engaging the finger, moves it to actuate a switch 42 to terminate the workhead's movement. The finger may have a pinion 38 engaging a spring loaded rack 39 carrying a cam 41 engageable with the switch 42. The shoe 31 is mounted on a hydraulic piston and cylinder, the piston rod 15 being pivoted to the chassis 20 and the cylinder being slidable in guides 24, 25. The switch 42 may activate the vehicle's brakes or stop the forward movement of one workhead relative to another workhead along the chassis.
