1366212 Hydrogenation catalysts SMITHKLINE CORP 22 Feb 1972 [22 Feb 1971] 21062/73 Divided out of 1366211 Heading B1E Palladium oxide hydrate supported on alphacellulose having an average article length of from 20 to 60 microns and an average particle thickness of from 16 to 20 microns is prepared by a process wherein particulate alpha-cellulose and an alkali, for example lithium hydroxide, sodium hydroxide, potassium hydroxide, ammonium carbonate or an alkali metal carbonate, are added in succession to an aqueous suspension of palladium chloride. As exemplified, alpha-cellulose having an average particle length of 55 microns and an average particle thickness of 19 microns and aqueous caustic soda solution are used in the preparation of material containing palladium oxide hydrate in an amount of 20 weight per cent (expressed as metal); such material may be used as catalyst in the preparation of desacetoxycephalosporanic acids by hydrogenation of cephalosporanic acids as described and claimed in the Parent Specification 1,366,211 (see Division C2).
