Aryldialkoxymethyl ketone (IV) is prepd. by reacting a 1-12C alkyl nitrite with an arylmethyl ketone having formula CH3CR'O(II) and an alcohol having formula R"OH (III) (where R' is 6-12c aryl and R" is 1-12C alkyl), under anhydrous conditions in the presence of a strong acid catalysts, pref. anhydrous HCl or opt. HF, BF3, and BF3 etherate, in catalytic quantities, e.g., 0.1-100 (5-25) wt. % w.r.t. wt. of reaction mixt. (IV) are photosensitisers for irradiation hardening of monomers and polymers with actinic rays, and may be used in concns. of 0.1-25 (0.5-10%). (IV) act quickly and cause no yellowing action when added to white pigmented compsns. e.g. paints or coatings.
