1,261,127. Shaft furnaces. CONZINC RIOTINTO OF AUSTRALIA Ltd. 3 Oct., 1969 [15 Oct., 1968], No. 48698/69. Heading F4B. [Also in Division C7] A shaft furnace for the direct smelting of coal/ore briquettes comprises a removable combustion chamber 19 fitted with three carbonizing shafts 11, 12, 13, formed with holes 20 of such a size and arrangement that charge material passing down the columns will not pass through. Gases and vapours passing through the holes 20 are burnt with oxygencontaining gas supplied through ducts 16a, 16b. Oxygen-containing gas is also supplied through tuyeres 21 and through a duct 17 opposite a vapour condenser 24 for volatile metals. The entrance 25 to the main shaft may be waisted. The removable combustion chamber 19 may be adapted for rotation. The carburizing shafts are preferably constructed of heat-resistant alloy or ceramic. The invention is applied to the reduction of oxide ores or concentrates containing Fe, Sn, Ni, Zn or Pb.
