The slots and webs may extend parallel to- Figures 1, 2 and 3- or inclined to-Figures 4 and 16-the major axis of the substantially elliptical plates. The webs may taper uniformly -Figure 5-or stepwise-Figure 6-extend along lines which converge-Figure 7-may be elliptical, drop-shaped or triangular-Figure 10-in cross-section may be of different widths -Figure 12-and one plate may have notches 136 in the webs-Figure 13. The slots need not be open-ended. The plates may be curved -Figures 8 and 9-and groups of plates or pairs of plates may overlap and interdigitate as shown in Figures 15 to 18. Pairs or groups of plates may be rotationally displaced through 90‹ from other pairs or groups-Figs. 14, 15, 16 and 19. The plates of each element may be of different form and when more than one element is inserted in a pipe they may be of different form. The pipe, or optionally the elements, may be adapted to be heated or cooled.
