Increasing the output of a sintering bed, esp. for iron ore - using cutters to form grooves in the mixt. being sintered

Rows of narrow, vertical grooves are cut along the length of the mixt. being sintered and in at least the major part of its thickness, using fixed, flat blades arranged in a vertical plane w.r.t. the sintering belt, the cutting edges being inclined in an inverse direction w.r.t. the travel of the belt so that the blades can divide the mixt. starting at the bottom. The grooves are pref. uniformly distributed across the width of the mixt. and either spaced at regular intervals along the length, or consisting of continuous grooves. Flat components of suitable wt. are pref. located on the sintering belt above the grooves thus formed in order to re-level the top surface of the bed which has been disturbed by the blades. The permeability of the mixt. being sintered, e.g. iron ore and coke is increased and the sintering time is reduced.
