There may be twisted vanes 14 to assist the helicoidal flow; the chamber may have an internal abrasion resistant coating 4, and a stopper 6 carrying a replaceable wear-measuring rod 7. The apex half-angle of the portion 8 is preferably 4‹-12‹; as described there are five outlets of which are as on the axis 3; relative flow rates through the outlets are dependant on the areas of the outlets and their angles with the surface 9. The outlets may have convergent or convergentdivergent velosity-increasing portions. The apparatus is especially applicable to a suspension of powder in a gas or liquid and specifically to a suspension of lime in pure oxygen at a density of 2 kg/cnSP3/SP, the gas entering at a pressure of 10 bars.
