1476643 Catheters BOEHRINGER INGELHEIM GmbH 16 Aug 1974 [16 Aug 1973 28 Nov 1973] 36215/74 Heading A5R A hollow pointed puncture needle 2, Figs. 1 and 6, for use inserted in a flexible catheter 1, comprises a hand-grip 6 of approximately trapezoidal transverse cross-section, two of the longitudinal sides 15, 16 of the hand-grip each having a concave surface, said surfaces being so angled with respect to the needle that the plane 7 of the hand-grip passing between sides 15, 16 is angled at 75‹ to the plane passing between the axis and tip of the needle. The hand-grip is hollow to provide a receptacle for blood, the rear end 7 being an air-permeable membrane and the remaining walls being made of fluted transparent material. The catheter 1 has a thickened portion 3 having a pair of grooves 4 formed therein for cooperation with claws 10 formed on a fixing member, Fig. 2, having an adhesive layer on one surface for securing to a patient's skin and holes 11 to allow flexing. The angle between planes X and Y is at least 45‹. In an alternative embodiment, Figs. 10 and 11 (not shown), the hand-grip has an approximately triangular transverse cross-section. In a further embodiment, Figs. 7-9 (not shown), the catheter is mounted in a connector having an adaptor in communication with a connecting tube, and the puncture needle has a longitudinal groove, whereby in use liquid may be infused through the connecting tube and catheter with the needle in place in the catheter. A closure member is provided which seals on removal of the needle from the catheter connector, and allows for injection of further fluids into the catheter. The connector is mounted on a base of triangular form for attachment to a patient.
