1,174,132. Separating hydrocarbons. UNIVERSAL OIL PRODUCTS CO. 12 April, 1967 [13 April, 1966], No. 16846/67. Heading C5E. A process for the separation of a hydrorefined product stream derived from treatment of a hydrocarbon charge stock with a hydrogen-containing gas, said hydro-refined product stream containing thermally unstable hydrocarbon constituents, corrosive normally gaseous constituents, and hydrocarbon-insoluble constituents comprises (a) injecting a hereinafter specified aqueous liquid stream into said product stream, passing the resulting first mixture into a separator and therein separating a first liquid aqueous phase containing said hydrocarbon insoluble constituents, a first liquid hydrocarbon phase, and a first vapour phase containing a portion of said corrosive constituent; (b) separately withdrawing said first aqueous phase and said first vapour phase; (c) withdrawing and passing said first hydrocarbon phase to a stripping column into which stream is injected as a stripping medium at a temperature below the level at which decomposition of said thermally unstable constituents occurs; (d) removing from the top portion of the stripping column a second mixture which contains gases, steam, and light hydrocarbon vapours and cooling and passing said second mixture into a second separator and therein separating a second vapour phase from a second liquid hydrocarbon phase and a second liquid aqueous phase; (e) withdrawing said second vapour phase containing substantially all of the remaining corrosive constituents as a product stream; (f) withdrawing said second hydrocarbon and aqueous phases from said second separator and recycling and injecting at least a portion of the latter as said aqueous liquid stream into said hydrorefined product stream; (g) removing a hydrocarbon stream containing said thermally unstable constituents from the lower portion of said stripping column and introducing the same into a distillation column operated at a pressure at which the temperature of distillation is below the thermal decomposition temperature of said constituents; and (h) withdrawing from said distillation column a hydrocarbon product containing said thermally unstable constituents. The process is exemplified by the treatment of a straight-run diesel oil which has been hydro-refined to reduce its sulphur content. The treatment of lubricating oil, fuel oil, kerosene, gas oil, reduced crude, or naphtha or mixtures thereof is also referred to.
