1439427 Fuel injection pumps; engine stop gear; decompression devices BURMEISTER & WAINS MOTOR OG MASKINFABRIK OF 1971 AS 30 July 1974 [3 Aug 1973] 33592/74 Headings F1A and F1K A cam-operated guide 6 for reciprocating a fuel injection pump plunger or an engine cylinder valve is provided with a mechanism for disengaging the guide's cam follower 8 from contact with its rotary cam 2, the mechanism comprising a cam member 14 secured to one end of a fluid operated slide 13, the slide being arranged to move the cam member 14 axially into the path of a bar 27 carried by the guide 6 and then to rotate the cam member 14 to a position in which it engages and lifts the bar 27. The slide 13 is mounted for movement within a fixed housing 12 and includes a sealing surface 22 which co-operates with the housing 12 to define therewith end chambers 43, 44. In Fig. 5 the slide 13 is in its retracted position, a switch valve 34 having just been operated to initiate disengagement of the follower 8. The operation of the valve 34 directs fluid to the chamber 43 to extend the slide 13. At the same time the opposed chambers 45, 46 of a ram 20 for rotating the slide are connected to atmosphere, the chamber 45 via a line 39, a port 33 and a passage 23, 24, 25 in the slide and the chamber 46 via a line 36, 37 connected to atmosphere through the valve 34. As extension proceeds a collar 15 on the cam member 14 passes under the path of bar 27 while the latter is nearing the end of its delivery stroke. On complete extension of the slide 13 the port 33 is subjected to the supply pressure in the chamber 43, whereby the chamber 45 is pressurized to extend the pistonrod 19 of the ram 20 and rotate, via a universal joint 18 and an arm 17, the slide 13. Since the cam member 14 is eccentrically mounted on the slide 13, the rotation causes the cam member fully to engage the bar 27 and lift the latter to disengage the follower 8 from the cam 2. On reversal of the valve 34, the slide is first rotated to the position shown whereafter a groove 26 aligns with the line 36 to pressurize the chamber 44. During the period in which the follower 8 is lifted by the cam 2, the shoulder 15 clears a step (29) on the bar 27 to allow retraction of the slide.
