Water-tight hollow columns 12 extend vertically from the base. A buoyant bridge 3 comprising a portion 24a locatable in the central opening is also provided with openings 15 which enable it to slide along the columns. Pumps and piping 22a progressively flood the water-tight compartment and the columns. Figs. 23, 24 illustrate the anchoring of the structure to the sea-bed by tubular and solid piles 73a, 73b respectively. In Fig. 24 water jets are discharged through openings 82 to remove loose material from the upper strata of the sea-bed.
